CRONUS collaborates with the University of Murcia, Spain, advancing research in chrononutrition, sleep, biological rhythms, and health through joint projects, scientific publications, academic mobility, and international training.
From Inspiration to Collaboration
A personal reflection by Giovana Longo-Silva, Founder & Coordinator of CRONUS
“When I first encountered chrononutrition, it was still a relatively new field to me. I was fascinated by it, but many of its concepts were difficult to fully understand.
That began to change when I came across Marta Garaulet through an online course on chrononutrition. I was impressed by her ability to explain complex scientific concepts in a simple and accessible way. Her approach helped me understand the field more deeply and sparked an even greater interest in chrononutrition.
I bought her book Los relojes de tu vida, and together with CRONUS students, we began reading and discussing the book and her scientific papers. What started as an effort to better understand chrononutrition gradually became an important part of our studies and discussions at CRONUS.”
“I first met Marta Garaulet in person at the World Sleep Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2023. By then, her courses, book, and scientific papers had already become important references for our discussions and studies at CRONUS.
We gave her a CRONUS mug as a small gift, and I was genuinely excited to finally meet someone whose work had influenced the way I was learning about chrononutrition.
Some time later, I contacted Marta and asked if I could have the opportunity to learn and work with her. That was the first step toward what would later become our scientific collaboration.”
“In 2024, Marta and I developed a joint research project, ‘Chrononutrition, Siestas and Obesity: A Comparative Study between Spanish and Brazilian Adults.’ With funding from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), our collaboration became a structured international research partnership.
In 2025, I moved to Murcia, where I spent more than a year conducting postdoctoral research at the University of Murcia. There, I had the opportunity to work alongside Marta and other researchers from her group, including, among others, María Rodríguez-Martín, Daniel Vicente, Ana Sanchez, Rafael Bastos, Mario Sanchez, and Sarah Oto, and to become closely involved with ONTIME, the large cohort coordinated by Marta and her research group. I also participated in data collection for the ClockWeight project, which investigates long-term weight-loss maintenance following obesity treatment.
This experience led to new research questions and scientific publications in international journals, including Appetite, Journal of Translational Medicine, and Obesity, while strengthening an ongoing collaboration between CRONUS and the University of Murcia and connecting our research in Brazil with the work developed by the Spanish group.
What inspires me most about Marta is her passion for science, creativity, scientific rigor, and belief that science should be understood by everyone — principles I try to bring into everything we do at CRONUS.”
